A false economy.

September 30th, 2008

Economy. The great theme of our day. Here’s my take.

I’ve had my yearly ACLU membership renewal notice sitting on my desk for at least a month. Because I’ve been biting my nails about the stock market — especially how it affects me — I haven’t written the check yet. It’s crazy.

Twenty years ago, George Bush Senior beat Michael Dukakis, running a negative campaign largely based on Dukakis’s membership in the ACLU. He sounded like Senator Joseph McCarthy who ran against any- and everybody who belonged to any liberal organization.

Oh yes, can we now admit to being liberal? Isn’t America what we call a liberal democracy? I claim to be a liberal and yet I’ve let my ACLU application gather dust. By failing to renew, I’m not saving money. I’m saving the fucking system, and the system does not work.

It’s 9:30 p.m. I will write a check now.
